I have a fantasy that one of these days I’m going to make my own gay vampire porn. This is unrealistic for a number of reasons: I know very little about porn (a part from gay vampires) or how hard it is to make, and I don’t know anyone who could. I am very hard on film makers who put a lot of effort into their creations only to have me tear them apart. Of course that’s the nature of the movie business.
There is a lot of porn available for gay men, so it would seem that either it’s easy to make and lots of profit in the adult film industry, and that to have an advantage you need a unique product to can stand out from the crowd. Of course the gay vampire fetish is a relatively small niche, but it’s gaining slowly. Yet you look at some studios and many seem to have only one focus, such as BelAmi who never deviates, or the different flavors from Nextdoor Studios who also stick to the same formula but at least theme their videos with some story lines. I see vampires as both a fetish and a plot device to give the film a unique story; vampires can fit into any genre of porn.
Looking back on the list of top gay vampire adult films, some of those picks show film makers who’ve put a lot of effort into creating good movies. Vampire of Budapest and the two Bite movies were good early vampire movies with great vampires. With each new movie, the vampires improved as did the stories. Putting aside Vampiros and Sex among friends: and the vampire, both of which had good elements but not the complete package, other movies on that list show the gay vampire genre improving. Thirst was a good step toward plot rich adult films with sexy vampires, and a not too unhappy ending. Night of the Gay Vampire is, even with its’ rough production and lack of fangs til the end, a good story and the ampires were well thought out. Finally Twinkblood and Twinklight have delivered two of the best gay vampire porns to date with high production values, beautiful vampires and interesting story lines.
Consider biting scenes, these movies feature fang filled post-coital bites worthy of any Hollywood film, and even better than some. It helps that the vampires are realistic. I recently rewatched Twinkblood and appreciate how well the film turned out and the great use of fangs and biting. Chase Harding who had been slated to originally appear in Twinklight, was clearly eager to be a vampire and it shows he enjoyed it. I think Boycrush could have followed up with even more vampire films. Finally as biased as I am toward Twinklight, it remains the best gay vampire series to date with gorgeous vamps and some brilliant bites (some of the time). Both Twinkblood and Twinklight rely heavily on twinks which are not for everyone, yet these are two really good productions that show the film makers were passionate about their creations.
So here’s the thing, vampire porn need vampires. I’ve relegated several well-meaning productions to the don’t watch list because the vampires were just so poor, well mostly Laid by the Vampire and Queer of the Damn, but also Bitten which put the vampire in the background in such poor lighting that it’s barely worth considering it vampire porn. Aside from Twinklight, no other film has set up for a sequel and delivered. A better sequel to Bitten was promised but not delivered.
I’m not naive enough to expect every studio to produce a gay vampire film, but I can dream. However, I can offer some simple suggestions, vampire porn needs vampires, and that means fangs. This doesn’t mean the vampires are exposed or baring their fangs through the whole movie or during sex, but at some point before or after would be nice. Films advertising vampires and not delivering are big disappointments. More than that, its poor business because when you don’t deliver you lose the trust of your customers. I just hope someone makes the next great gay vampire porn and keeps the momentum going, but it’s going to be hard to improve the quality. So if you’re going to make a gay vampire adult film, please make the effort, don’t cut corners, and keep the fangs.
