Time to set a reminder—Interview with the Vampire returns May 12, and we’re finally getting the continuation we’ve been waiting for since season one ended—two years ago.
AMC has announced the premiere date for the second season, which picks up Louis and Claudia’s story after they flee New Orleans and Lestat. This will be an eight-episode season (one more than season one’s seven) and it will cover the second half of Anne Rice’s novel. It also will bring us to the “Theatre des Vampires”, introducing the ancient vampire Armand, and completing the story that began in 2022.
WARNING, SPOILER HERE: If you remember season one’s finale, Louis revealed that Rashid—his assistant during the present-day interview with Daniel Molloy—is actually Armand, described as “the love of his life.” Season two will show us how they met, what happened in Paris, and why Louis’ story has so many gaps and inconsistencies when he tells it to Daniel.
The casting for season two brings back Assad Zaman as Armand and adds Ben Daniels as Santiago, the master of ceremonies at the “Theatre des Vampires”. Both are crucial characters in the Paris section of the book, and their addition promises to complicate Louis’ already complicated existence as an immortal trying to escape his past with Lestat.
Season one proved that explicitly gay vampire television could be prestige television—beautifully shot, thoughtfully written, and unapologetically queer. The performances from Jacob Anderson (Louis) and Sam Reid (Lestat) were stunning, and the show’s willingness to explore the full complexity of their toxic, passionate relationship set it apart from every previous Interview adaptation.
Now we get to see what comes after that relationship. We get to see Louis try to build something new, only to discover (as we already know from the season one finale) that his story is more complicated than he’s been telling Daniel… or himself.
May 12 can’t come soon enough. The wait for gay vampires in Paris has been long, but if season two maintains the quality of season one, it’ll be worth it.
Season 2 of Interview with the Vampire premieres May 12, 2024 on AMC and AMC+.
