The Lair
Review
Easily in the top 10 gay vampire shows ever made so far, The Lair is the first original gay vampire television show. Created by HereTV and creator Fred Olen Ray, the first season introduced viewers to “The Lair” private sex club run by vampires. Local reporter Tom gets himself and his boyfriend Jonathan mixed up with the vampires when the head vampire decides Tom is the reincarnation of his long dead ex-boyfriend–the vampire who turned him.
Overall the first season was a good start although there were some definite weak parts, including some questionable acting. Unfortunately the second season wasted the extra screen time during it’s nine episode run to grow the cast and develop two unnecessary story lines—introducing a werewolf and a killer plant, even though these new characters had little to do with the vampires or the Lair. The show returned in 2009 with the third and final season, and the introduction of even more characters and storylines.
Despite being billed as a gay vampire series, numerous other supernatural elements were added throughout the series run, not just a werewolf and killer plant, but witchcraft, ghosts, a Gorgon, and references to The Picture of Dorian Gray. Of the series regulars there was a mix of familiar actors, models and porn stars. Colton Ford and Dylan Vox appear in every episode, with Vox providing more on screen nudity and action than Ford. Other former adult film stars included Frankie Valenti (Johnny Hazzard), Tyler Saint, Dean Coxx and others.
Episodes did include a good amount of sex but not everything was revealed or finished. Some sex scenes ended with vampires biting their partner.
Spoiler alert
Season one ended on a cliffhanger and gave us a new vampire—Thom’s Boyfriend Jonathan—introducing the possibility that Tom would be turned too, however as season two began, Tom remained human and Jonathan, now played by a different (and much hotter) actor, got little screen time, which was unfortunate because the actor was one of the highlights with his production stills promoted for the season two heavily. Eventually the new Jonathan was sadly and brutally killed off with little warning one episode. Season ended on a similar cliffhanger, giving us a glimpse of another hot vampire but sadly The Lair never saw a season four.
Season 1 launched in 2007, consisting of six episodes, which had wrapped production in January of that year. The first two episodes premiered on June 1, 2007. Season 2, consisting of 9 episodes debuted on September 5, 2008. A third season of 13 episodes was announced in September 2008 and Colton Ford confirmed that filming took place in October and November 2008. Season 3 premiered September 4, 2009.
