Vampire Diaries set for a spin off series

As the fourth series of the Vampire Diaries nears to a close, an upcoming episode will be an back-door pilot for a possible new spin-off series, The Originals. Following the family of original vampires, the new series (if green-lit) will add another vampire show to the CW. Along with Being Human and True Blood, we’re doing really well for mainstream vampire television.

The original vampire family has been integral to the last few seasons, popping back into the storyline often, as some characters try to destroy them while original Klaus also keeps trying to kill everyone else. They are currently hanging around in this season, and since the major drama of Jeremy’s “hunter’s marks” has ended, Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah just don’t seem to be contributing much. And so it seems a good time for the next episode where the three meet up with werewolf Hayley in New Orleans for the spin-off set up.

Now of course maybe you’re not following the Vampire Diaries. I’ll admit I have found it difficult to keep up with the show. A few seasons back we were promised a gay character and the best we got was Caroline’s father, and not say a gay vampire (and one not immediately killed off). Vampire Diaries has also dragged on; for immortals time moves slowly in Mystic Falls. Soon after the first season the storyline broke away from the original books created back in the 90s by L.J. Smith (I understand she’s lost control of her books and any artistic input in the show).
