Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person (original title Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant) is an exceptional and quirky vampire movie from first time director Ariane Louis-Seize. Filmed in Montreal, Quebec, the film shows just how good Quebec cinema is at delivering unique and award-winning stories.
And yes, this movie is in French.
The film, as known as Humanist Vampire Too Sensitive to Kill, follows Sasha, a vampire reluctant to kill but faced with a dilemma when her blood supply is cut off by her parents. Thankfully she meets Paul, a lonely teenager with suicidal thoughts and a desire to die. But of course their night together doesn’t go as planned. It’s a wild and yet quiet night, and it unfolds with comedic moments mixed with potential romance and the underlying hint of horror. It’s well worth watching, especially for the standout performances by the two leads, Sara Montpetit and Félix-Antoine Bénard.

Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person was shot in 2022 and premiered on September 3, 2023 at the Venice International Film Festival before getting its Canadian premiere shortly after at TIFF, then landing briefly in theatres in October 2023. And yes, we’ve only just discovered and watched it now! We’re desperately holding back any spoilers but no, it doesn’t appear as if Paul is gay.
