Vampire Diaries spin off The Originals gets green light

Scene from the Vampire Diaries, the Originals episode

Thursday night’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, a back-door pilot for a possible new CW series that follows the original vampire family, was clearly a success for the network as the spin-off has been picked up for the 2013-2014 season. This of course means another vampire show will be airing next season, after the summer run of True Blood, next season will also see The Vampire Diaries, Being Human season 4 and NBC’s Dracula.

The Originals will follow the three remaining members of the Mikaelson clan as they return to New Orleans, the city their family apparently built and which is now run by vampires (and free of werewolves). So we can expect plenty of scenes from the French Quarter as Niklaus and Elijah take up with the oppressed witches in the mission to take down Niklaus’ protegé Marcel who controls the city.

After watching this episode I realize one of the reasons The Vampire Diaries has lost its edge, the minimal amount of fang action. There are other reasons, but here I was watching all these sexy vampires of New Orleans and wanting to see them vamp out with no luck. There’s still hope for the new show, maybe the writers will get to break away from the love-triangle and high school drama issues that plague The Vampire Diaries.
